QR Code Stickers vs NFC Tags: Which Should You Use?

QR codes and NFC tags solve the same basic problem — getting someone from a physical object to digital information in one motion. They're often treated as interchangeable, but they work differently, and one is usually the better fit depending on what you're labelling.
How each one works
QR codes are printed patterns read by a phone's camera. Almost every phone made in the last several years can scan one directly from the built-in camera app — no setup, no special hardware.
NFC tags are small chips embedded in a sticker or card that transmit data wirelessly when a phone is held close to them (a few centimetres). Most modern smartphones support NFC, but it sometimes needs to be enabled in settings, and very old or budget devices may not have it at all.
Cost
QR codes cost nothing to create — you generate one from a note or link and print it on ordinary paper or a label. NFC tags are physical chips you have to buy, typically a small cost per tag, which adds up quickly if you're labelling dozens or hundreds of items.
Compatibility
QR codes win here by a wide margin: any camera app on any smartphone can read one, with zero configuration. NFC requires the phone to have an NFC chip, have it turned on, and — on some older Android phones and most iPhones before iOS 14 — an extra tap or app to trigger the read.
Durability and reprinting
A QR code is just ink on a surface — cheap to replace if it fades or gets damaged, but also vulnerable to smudging, scratches or fading over time. An NFC chip has no visible surface to wear out, so it survives rougher environments (industrial equipment, outdoor use) better, at a higher upfront cost.
Which should you pick?
- Choose QR codes for menus, signage, WiFi passwords, instructions, and anything where cost and universal compatibility matter more than physical durability — this covers most everyday use cases.
- Choose NFC for harsh environments where a printed code would wear out quickly, or when you specifically want a "tap" interaction rather than requiring the camera app.
